The format

What UBS's online assessment actually looks like

Issued roughly 5-7 days after the initial application screen, before the HireVue and live rounds.

Timed sections

Most online assessments split into 3-5 sections, each with its own clock. Speed and accuracy both count.

Adaptive difficulty

Modern formats get harder if you answer correctly, easier if you struggle. Your final score reflects what you can actually do under time pressure.

Pass mark

UBS sets a pass mark per test type. Below it, you don't progress regardless of how strong the rest of your application is.

Completion window. Complete it promptly once invited; the aptitude sections are strictly timed.

By division. Broadly consistent across investment-banking tracks.

Recent changes. No major recent format change; successful candidates do not have to retake the assessments within six months when applying for other UBS roles.

The provider

What UBS actually buys

UBS configures its own selection of UBS Culture Match plus Aon / cut-e aptitude tests modules. Below: the exact products in the suite, why they were chosen, and what the provider's reputation is across the candidate pool.

Modules in the suite

  • UBS Culture Match (situational judgment, 18 scenarios)
  • Aon numerical reasoning (37 tasks, 12 minutes)
  • cut-e Scales verbal reasoning (49 questions, 12 minutes)
  • Inductive / logical reasoning (about 6 minutes)

History at UBS. A four-part early-funnel screen that filters for values alignment plus analytical speed and accuracy before the live rounds.

Candidate reputation. Demanding mainly because of the time pressure; the numerical test in particular is hard to finish in the allotted 12 minutes.

Section breakdown

What each part of the UBS assessment tests

Each section has its own format, timer and trap pattern. Worked examples below show exactly what you will see and where candidates drop points.

UBS Culture Match (situational judgment)

18 scenarios · Untimed, typically 15-20 minutes

What it tests. Judgment and values alignment with the Pillars, Principles and Behaviors.

Worked example. A scenario where a teammate is about to cut a compliance corner under deadline pressure, and you choose the best response.

Common traps. Answering against personal preference rather than UBS values.

How to handle it. Pick the response that best reflects the Three Keys, especially accountability with integrity and client focus.

Numerical reasoning (Aon)

37 tasks · 12 minutes

What it tests. Fast, accurate interpretation of numerical data under heavy time pressure.

Common traps. Spending too long on one hard item; most candidates cannot complete every question.

How to handle it. Prioritize accuracy, move quickly, skip and return, and keep a clean scratchpad.

Verbal reasoning (cut-e Scales)

49 questions · 12 minutes

What it tests. Understanding written material and drawing valid inferences.

Common traps. Using outside knowledge instead of the passage.

How to handle it. Answer strictly on the text, decide and move on.

Inductive / logical reasoning

About 6 minutes

What it tests. Identifying patterns and relationships in complex information.

Common traps. Matrices and sequences catch out the unpracticed.

How to handle it. Isolate one rule at a time and eliminate options.

Pass mark

How UBS scores the assessment

Aptitude sections are scored on speed and accuracy, benchmarked against the applicant pool; the Culture Match is scored on values alignment.

Methodology. A genuine cut: below-threshold scores end the application for the cycle.

Response time. Typically within a week or two.

Score visibility. Candidates do not see raw scores or detailed feedback.

How to practise

Drill UBS's exact format

Same provider, same section structure, same time pressure. With a scored report after every test so you can fix the weakest section before the real one.

  • UBS Culture Match plus Aon / cut-e aptitude tests-calibrated practice. Not a generic stand-in. The exact provider and section structure UBS uses on the day.
  • Adaptive question difficulty. Questions get harder when you nail them, easier when you struggle. Walk away knowing where you actually stand.
  • Coaching, not just a score. "You are spending too long on table-data questions" beats "you scored 68%". Specific advice per weak section.
  • Percentile benchmarking. Your score compared to the US candidate pool, so you know if 70% is excellent or worrying for that test.

Why candidates fail

How candidates lose UBS's assessment

Specific failure patterns documented across past applicants. Most are avoidable with structured preparation.

  1. 1

Poor pacing on the numerical test

Over-investing in early hard items leaves too little time for the rest of the 37 tasks.

  2. 2

Answering the Culture Match on instinct

Choosing what you would personally do rather than what aligns with UBS values costs marks.

  3. 3

    No format-specific practice

Meeting Aon and cut-e style items cold under the clock costs points.

What works

What separates the candidates who pass

Concrete habits drilled by candidates who clear the cut-off, drawn from applicant accounts and practice patterns.

  • Timed practice

Rehearse full-length numerical and verbal sets under the real 12-minute limits so pace is automatic.

  • Study the Three Keys

Know the Pillars, Principles and Behaviors so the Culture Match answers are consistent and values-aligned.

  • Sharpen mental math

Drill percentages, ratios and quick arithmetic to free up time on data interpretation.

From past applicants

How recent UBS candidates approached the assessment

Anonymised candidate accounts of how recent applicants approached the UBS assessment. Each covers the prep, the experience, and the outcome.

Global Banking, Summer Analyst (NY)

Prep. Two weeks of timed numerical and verbal practice plus reading up on the UBS values for the Culture Match.

Experience. The numerical section was the tightest; I could not finish all 37 tasks, so I prioritized accuracy and answered as many as I could cleanly. The Culture Match was untimed but I kept mapping answers back to the firm values.

Outcome. Cleared the assessment and was invited to the HireVue.

Practice strategy

Where to drill the UBS format

Match your prep to a timed, multi-part battery rather than a single test type.

  • Intervyo timed aptitude practice

Numerical, verbal and inductive sets under realistic time pressure, scored with a per-section debrief so you can see which type is dragging your pace.

  • Mental-math drills

Short daily percentage, ratio and arithmetic drills to build speed on data interpretation.

  • UBS values review

Read and internalize the Pillars, Principles and Behaviors before attempting the Culture Match.

Time investment. Around 10-20 hours of timed practice over two to three weeks is typical for strong scorers.

Time management

Five moves that protect your score

  1. 01Set your own clock per question. Divide section time by question count. Move on when you hit your per-question budget, even if you are mid-thought.
  2. 02Read the question before the chart. Half the work in numerical is finding the right number in a table. Knowing what you are looking for cuts the time in half.
  3. 03Use "Cannot Say" generously. Verbal reasoning rewards strict reading. If the passage does not say it, the answer is "Cannot Say", not your own inference.
  4. 04Skip the impossible ones. Most tests do not penalise wrong answers more than skips. If you cannot see it in 20 seconds, flag and move on.
  5. 05Practise the exact format, not a generic stand-in. UBS Culture Match plus Aon / cut-e aptitude tests has its own rhythm, and a generic reasoning test is not the same. Intervyo's simulation is calibrated to this format, so you rehearse the real thing under real timing rather than a generic aptitude set.

FAQ

UBS Online Assessment questions, answered

Four parts: a UBS Culture Match situational-judgment test (18 scenarios, untimed, typically 15-20 minutes), an Aon numerical reasoning test (37 data-interpretation tasks in 12 minutes), a cut-e verbal reasoning test (49 questions in 12 minutes) and a short inductive / logical reasoning test of about 6 minutes. The aptitude sections are strictly timed and the numerical test is hard to finish.
