The basics
What is a HireVue interview?
A HireVue interview is a pre-recorded video interview where you answer questions on camera without an interviewer present. The employer sets the questions in advance, and you record your answers at a time that suits you. Your responses are then reviewed by recruiters and, in most cases, analysed by HireVue's AI technology.
HireVue is used by the majority of top-tier graduate employers in the US, including Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Citi, Barclays, Deloitte, EY, Bain, and Amazon. It is typically the second or third stage of the application process, coming after the online application and aptitude tests but before the final interview or Superday.
The standard format gives you 30 seconds of preparation time after reading each question, followed by up to 2-3 minutes to record your answer. Most interviews contain 3-5 questions, primarily behavioural and competency-based, with some firms including motivational or technical questions. The entire process usually takes 20-30 minutes.
Since 2021, HireVue no longer uses facial analysis. The AI now focuses exclusively on verbal content: what you say, how you structure your answer, and how relevant your response is to the question. This means your words and preparation matter far more than your appearance or body language.

How many questions are in a real HireVue interview?

Can I retake my answer on HireVue?
It depends on the firm. Most UK bulge brackets (Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley) operate a strict one-take policy. US programmes increasingly allow up to two retakes per question. Always check the platform instructions before starting - if no retake is permitted, the first take is the only take.

How long should my HireVue answers be?
Aim for 90 seconds to 2 minutes. The recording window is usually 2 minutes; leaving 5-10 seconds unused looks more deliberate than racing to the buzzer. Under 60 seconds reads as underdeveloped; full 2-minute answers without pausing for breath read as rehearsed.
Should I dress formally for HireVue?
Yes. Treat it as you would an in-person interview at the firm. For investment banking and consulting: dark suit, plain shirt, conservative tie for men; professional business suit or smart business wear for women. For tech roles, smart business casual is acceptable. Lighting and a clean background matter more than the specific outfit.
