The format

What the UBS HireVue actually looks like

Around 4-7 pre-recorded questions (most commonly 5-6), mostly fit and motivation with some lighter technical. Record tight, structured answers to camera and lead each one with your point.

Prep timer

Roughly 1.5-2 minutes to prepare each answer.

Recording

About 2-3 minutes to record each answer.

Scoring

An AI-assisted review of your recorded answers (what you say and how you say it: content, word choice, structure, pace and tone) alongside review by the hiring team.

Invitation timing. Sent after the application and online assessment, with results often returning within 1-2 weeks.

Completion window. A 5-day window from the invitation to complete it.

Retake policy. Generally one recording per question.

Volume context. A high-volume early screen before the live interview rounds.

Recent changes. Remains a pre-recorded HireVue weighted toward fit and motivation; the most recent reports describe slightly shorter prep timers (around 1.5 minutes).

Question categories

What UBS actually asks, by category

The HireVue rotates across distinct question types. For each, what the firm is screening for, plus a weak answer signal and a strong one drawn from past applicant accounts.

Motivation

The core of the UBS HireVue: why this firm and why this division, ideally informed by the US buildout and the Three Keys.

Why UBS?

What they test. Specific, researched motivation

Weak answer. It is a prestigious global bank that pays well.

Strong answer. UBS is scaling its US franchise fast after the Credit Suisse integration, and the universal-bank model means I would learn advisory alongside one of the largest wealth businesses in the world, which is exactly the cross-divisional exposure I want early.

Why investment banking, and why this division at UBS?

What they test. Understanding of the division

Strong answer. A clear reason for the division based on what it does day to day, tied to your strengths and one piece of evidence.

Behavioral / fit

Competency prompts mapped to the UBS Behaviors.

Tell me about a time you worked in a team or dealt with conflict.

What they test. Collaboration

Strong answer. A structured STAR story showing how you listened, contributed and reached a good outcome together.

Describe a setback and how you overcame it.

What they test. Resilience and accountability

Walk me through your resume.

What they test. Concise narrative

Strong answer. A tight 60-90 second story connecting your background to UBS and your division.

Lighter technical / commercial

Some questions touch finance fundamentals and market awareness, not deep modeling.

What metrics would you use to assess a company financial health?

What they test. Basic finance understanding

Strong answer. Name a few relevant measures (profitability, leverage, liquidity, cash flow) and briefly say why each matters.

How do you stay current with financial markets and news?

What they test. Genuine commercial interest

  • Evidence in fit answers mapped to the Behaviors
  • Basic finance and commercial awareness

Pass rates. Candidate reports suggest roughly 40-50% advance, though this figure is a year or two old.

Response time. Often within 1-2 weeks.

Feedback policy. No individual feedback is provided.

Why candidates fail

How candidates lose the UBS HireVue

Specific failure patterns documented across past applicants. Most are avoidable with disciplined preparation.

  1. 1

    Generic motivation

A why-UBS answer that could apply to any bank fails at a firm that recruits against specific values.

  2. 2

    Rambling to fill time

Unstructured answers that run to the buzzer read worse than a tight, well-led response.

  3. 3

    Weak setup

Poor lighting, background noise or a distracting backdrop undercuts good content.

What works

What separates candidates who pass

Concrete moves drilled by candidates who clear the cut-off, drawn from applicant accounts and recruiter feedback.

  • Lead with the point

State your conclusion first, then support it with one example.

  • Map to the Three Keys

Frame fit stories around a Behavior such as accountability with integrity or collaboration.

  • Rehearse to the timer

Practice to camera against the real prep and recording windows so pace is automatic.

From past applicants

How recent UBS candidates approached the HireVue

Anonymised candidate accounts of how recent UBS applicants approached the HireVue. Each covers preparation, the experience, and the outcome.

Global Banking, Summer Analyst (NY)

Prep. Wrote and rehearsed answers to why UBS, why the division and a resume walk-through, and practiced to camera against a short prep timer.

Experience. Around six questions, mostly fit and motivation with one lighter finance question. The why-UBS prompt came early; I led with the post-Credit Suisse US buildout and gave one concrete reason.

Outcome. Advanced to the phone screen roughly two weeks later.

What gets you through

Five moves that decide the HireVue

  1. 01STAR every behavioural. Situation in one sentence, task in one, action in three, result with a number. The structure is the score.
  2. 02Cut filler words ruthlessly. Three filler words ("um", "you know", "sort of") drops your confidence score by ~6 points. Record yourself, count them, stop them.
  3. 03Use specific numbers. "Led a team" is filler. "Led a 6-person team that delivered £400k of revenue" is signal. Every behavioural needs at least one quantified outcome.
  4. 04Reference UBS concretely. For motivation questions, name a specific deal, a person you spoke to, a division you researched. Generic "I admire the brand" answers are the modal failure mode.
  5. 05Practise on camera, not in your head. Reading answers to yourself is not the same as recording them. Filler words, eye-line, pacing: all only show up when the camera is on.

FAQ

UBS HireVue questions, answered

Mostly not. It is weighted toward fit and motivation, with some lighter technical or commercial content such as how you would assess a company financial health or how you keep up with markets. The deeper technicals come at the phone screen and first-round interviews. Focus here on tight, specific, well-delivered answers to camera.
