The format

What the Morgan Stanley HireVue actually looks like

3-5 questions, 30s prep and 90s-2min recording, one retake per question. Behavioral, motivation, market and light technical. Only ~10-15% advance.

Prep timer

30 seconds for most business divisions (60 seconds for Technology).

Recording

90 seconds for most business divisions (2 minutes for Wealth and Technology).

Scoring

A two-tier pipeline: HireVue AI insights (keyword density, speech cadence at 130-150 words per minute, eye-line tracking) then human business-unit review, often at 1.5x speed.

Invitation timing. The primary first-round digital filter, sitting after the resume sift and online assessment and before any live round.

Completion window. A 48-hour completion window from the email timestamp (occasionally extended to 72 hours for some divisions). Missing it is an automated, irreversible withdrawal.

Retake policy. Typically one retake per question, but the first attempt is permanently deleted and the second is saved as final even if it is worse.

Volume context. Roughly 25-35% of applicants clear the resume screen to receive a HireVue; only ~10-15% of those who record advance. Final program acceptance is ~3-4%.

Recent changes. A hybrid scoring model now blends linguistic algorithmic profiling with human review, plus more situational and localized prompts to break canned, AI-scripted answers.

Question categories

What Morgan Stanley actually asks, by category

The HireVue rotates across distinct question types. For each, what the firm is screening for, plus a weak answer signal and a strong one drawn from past applicant accounts.

Motivation and culture

Granular firm authenticity and knowledge of the five core values, the business model and the specific division and office.

Why are you looking to build a career at Morgan Stanley specifically, rather than our bulge-bracket peers?

What they test. Specific, researched motivation

Weak answer. Morgan Stanley is a premier global firm with great deals and intelligent people I want to learn from.

Strong answer. I am drawn to the unique balance of a leading Institutional Securities Group with a massive Wealth Management franchise that gives the firm capital stability, and I want the Houston energy group specifically for its transition-sector advisory.

Which of our five core values resonates most with you, and how have you demonstrated it?

What they test. Core-value alignment with a real anecdote

Behavioral and resume

Resilience, accountability and a logical narrative delivered to camera.

Tell me about a time you worked in a high-stress team to deliver under a compressed deadline.

What they test. EQ, accountability, structured delivery

Strong answer. A tight SOAR answer that spends most of the time on the action you took and a quantified result.

Walk me through your resume and how your experiences led you here.

What they test. Concise 60-75 second narrative arc

Market and technical

Commercial curiosity plus a light technical filter for banking tracks.

What is a recent macroeconomic trend you are following, and how does it impact our clients?

What they test. Real metrics over headline summaries

Weak answer. AI is really big right now and changing everything.

Strong answer. The surge in hyperscaler capex toward an ~$800B annualized rate is creating a data-center energy bottleneck that benefits regulated utilities with baseload power and feeds the Power & Utilities ECM pipeline.

If a company incurs a $10 increase in depreciation, walk me through the three financial statements.

What they test. Accounting precision without scratch paper

Strong answer. EBIT down $10, net income down $6 at a 40% rate; on the cash flow statement net income down $6 plus $10 add-back so cash up $4; balance sheet cash up $4, PP&E down $10, retained earnings down $6, balancing.

How it is scored

The Morgan Stanley HireVue scoring rubric

A two-tier pipeline: HireVue AI insights (keyword density, speech cadence at 130-150 words per minute, eye-line tracking) then human business-unit review, often at 1.5x speed.

  • Communication clarity (SOAR/BLUF structure)
  • Executive presence and composure
  • Analytical rigor and quantified outcomes
  • Cultural alignment with the core values

Pass rates. Only ~10-15% of recorded candidates advance.

Response time. 3-7 business days for strong profiles; 1-3 weeks otherwise.

Feedback policy. No personalized feedback at or before this stage.

Why candidates fail

How candidates lose the Morgan Stanley HireVue

Specific failure patterns documented across past applicants. Most are avoidable with disciplined preparation.

  1. 1

    The generic-bank trap

Motivation that could be pasted into a JPMorgan or Bank of America interview signals zero research.

  2. 2

    Reading scripts off-screen

The software and reviewers spot eyes tracking text; it kills natural inflection and reads as unprepared.

  3. 3

    Exceeding the time limit

Spending 60 seconds on setup gets you cut off before the action and result.

  4. 4

    Vague, unquantified results

"We finished on time and the professor liked it" lacks the metrics that make a story land.

  5. 5

    Panic during retakes

Using the single retake on a minor slip often produces a worse, more stressed second attempt.

What works

What separates candidates who pass

Concrete moves drilled by candidates who clear the cut-off, drawn from applicant accounts and recruiter feedback.

  • Hardcode core values into stories

Weave phrases that signal Do the Right Thing and Put Clients First naturally into behavioral answers.

  • Lead with BLUF

State the bottom line in the first 15 seconds, then support it.

  • Reference a specific high-yield deal

Cite a relevant transaction with enterprise value, synergies and financing structure, fitted to the group.

  • Pace to ~75 seconds

Land your conclusion with a 10-second buffer rather than racing the buzzer.

  • Direct camera eye alignment

Resize the window under the lens and look at the camera, not your own image.

From past applicants

How recent Morgan Stanley candidates approached the HireVue

Anonymised candidate accounts of how recent Morgan Stanley applicants approached the HireVue. Each covers preparation, the experience, and the outcome.

Investment Banking Summer Analyst (target school, NY)

Prep. Built a versatile SOAR matrix, rehearsed to a 90-second timer, and prepared a market view on Permian Basin consolidation with exact multiples.

Experience. Five questions arrived ~48 hours after applying: resume, why Morgan Stanley, a team-dynamic story, a market trend and a depreciation walk-through. Looked at the lens, linked stories to core values, and used no retakes.

Outcome. Heard back six days later with a first-round invite that led to a superday and an offer.

Sales & Trading Summer Analyst (non-target state school)

Prep. Practiced pacing with a countdown timer aiming for the 80-second mark and prepared a commodity trade pitch with entry, exit and stop-loss.

Experience. Four questions ~two weeks after applying, heavy on market awareness. Used one retake on the behavioral question after a siren interrupted the first take.

Outcome. Cleared the round after about two and a half weeks and advanced.

What gets you through

Five moves that decide the HireVue

  1. 01STAR every behavioural. Situation in one sentence, task in one, action in three, result with a number. The structure is the score.
  2. 02Cut filler words ruthlessly. Three filler words ("um", "you know", "sort of") drops your confidence score by ~6 points. Record yourself, count them, stop them.
  3. 03Use specific numbers. "Led a team" is filler. "Led a 6-person team that delivered £400k of revenue" is signal. Every behavioural needs at least one quantified outcome.
  4. 04Reference Morgan Stanley concretely. For motivation questions, name a specific deal, a person you spoke to, a division you researched. Generic "I admire the brand" answers are the modal failure mode.
  5. 05Practise on camera, not in your head. Reading answers to yourself is not the same as recording them. Filler words, eye-line, pacing: all only show up when the camera is on.

FAQ

Morgan Stanley HireVue questions, answered

Most business divisions (IBD, GCM, S&T) get 4-5 questions with 30 seconds to prepare and 90 seconds to record each; Wealth Management gets 3-4 with a 2-minute recording, and Technology gets 3 questions (60-second prep, 2-minute record) plus a HackerRank test. Aim to land each answer around the 75-80 second mark with a buffer rather than racing the timer.
