The format

What the Latham & Watkins HireVue actually looks like

Pre-recorded video interview. Each question gets a short prep timer, then a one-take recording window. No retakes. Scored by Latham & Watkins talent acquisition against a rubric.

Prep timer

None. You speak in real time.

Recording

Not applicable; this is a live two-way interview, not a recorded one.

Scoring

Interviewers complete a structured qualitative scorecard immediately after the live session; there is no algorithmic voice or facial scoring.

Invitation timing. Important: Latham does NOT use a one-way HireVue video interview for US summer associate hiring. The first live evaluation is a real-time screening interview, typically within days of applying pre-OCI.

Completion window. Screener invitations arrive on a rolling basis, often within 3-10 business days of a direct application.

Retake policy. None. The screener is live and conversational; there are no recordings, pauses or retakes.

Volume context. Thousands apply across major US offices; roughly 15-20% secure a screener, and around 25-35% of those advance to a callback.

Recent changes. A growing share of hiring runs pre-OCI via the careers portal (FloRecruit or Zoom), but evaluation remains entirely human-driven, not AI-scored.

Question categories

What Latham & Watkins actually asks, by category

The HireVue rotates across distinct question types. For each, what the firm is screening for, plus a weak answer signal and a strong one drawn from past applicant accounts.

Motivation (Why Latham, Why Law)

Latham screens for genuine alignment with its global platform, the unassigned model and its specific collaborative culture.

Why Latham & Watkins over other top-tier AmLaw 100 firms in this market?

What they test. Specific, researched motivation

Weak answer. Latham is a highly ranked, prestigious global firm with great attorneys.

Strong answer. I am drawn to the Unassigned Program, which lets me sample corporate, finance and litigation before committing, and to your market-leading leveraged finance practice, which fits my corporate finance background.

Why are you interested in our [Houston / New York / Bay Area] office specifically?

What they test. Genuine ties to the city and market

Behavioral / Competency

Emotional intelligence, execution under pressure and low-ego adaptability.

Tell me about a time you managed a heavy workload with competing, urgent deadlines. How did you prioritize?

What they test. Systematic prioritization, not crisis management

Strong answer. Use STAR: a centralized tracking matrix, self-imposed micro-deadlines, and proactive communication to renegotiate one deadline 48 hours ahead, delivering everything on time.

Share a time you made a mistake on a project and how you handled the fallout.

What they test. Ownership and rapid remediation

Resume walkthrough

Narrative clarity and thread-weaving across your choices.

Walk me through your resume, highlighting what led you to corporate law.

What they test. A tight, logical 90-second narrative

Weak answer. Reading the resume line by line chronologically without explaining the why.

Strong answer. A 90-second pitch that links past academic or professional experience directly to the skills of a high-performing Latham associate.

Commercial awareness

Business instincts: you do not need to be an M&A partner, but you should read the WSJ, Bloomberg Law or The American Lawyer.

What major macroeconomic trend is impacting our corporate clients, and how should Latham respond?

What they test. Connecting macro to client and firm strategy

Weak answer. AI is changing things.

Strong answer. Heightened FTC/DOJ antitrust scrutiny on mega-mergers means Latham must integrate its regulatory and corporate teams from day one to price regulatory risk.

Tell me about a recent deal or case Latham handled that caught your eye.

What they test. Specific diligence on the firm

How it is scored

The Latham & Watkins HireVue scoring rubric

Interviewers complete a structured qualitative scorecard immediately after the live session; there is no algorithmic voice or facial scoring.

Scoring dimensions

  • Intellectual capability (sharp, structured answers)
  • Commercial/business sense
  • Communication and presence
  • Firm fit / "Latham Culture"

Pass rates. Roughly 25-35% of screened candidates advance to a callback; a single attorney holds significant gatekeeping power.

Response time. A callback invitation or rejection typically within 2-7 business days.

Feedback policy. Formal qualitative feedback is almost never provided to rejected candidates.

Why candidates fail

How candidates lose the Latham & Watkins HireVue

Specific failure patterns documented across past applicants. Most are avoidable with disciplined preparation.

  1. 1

    Treating it like an interrogation

Short, robotic one-sentence answers instead of a professional peer-to-peer dialogue.

  2. 2

    The prestige-only trap

Relying on "it is a top firm" without a distinct reason for Latham specifically.

  3. 3

    No STAR structure

Rambling for four minutes without defining the action you took or the business result.

  4. 4

    Lazy closing questions

Asking easily Googleable questions like "What is your summer program like?" instead of high-level ones.

What works

What separates candidates who pass

Concrete moves drilled by candidates who clear the cut-off, drawn from applicant accounts and recruiter feedback.

  • Master the "Latham pitch"

Communicate how your brand fits the unassigned framework or the firm's leadership in debt capital markets and leveraged finance.

  • Have a practice-group thesis

Even within the unassigned pool, present a clear hypothesis of where your skills will shine.

  • Frame everything commercially

Describe past roles in terms of business outcomes, efficiency gains and client management.

  • Close with 1-2 sophisticated questions

Spark an authentic conversation about market dynamics or mentorship.

From past applicants

How recent Latham & Watkins candidates approached the HireVue

Anonymised candidate accounts of how recent Latham & Watkins applicants approached the HireVue. Each covers preparation, the experience, and the outcome.

Pre-OCI blitz, New York office (T14)

Prep. Researched the unassigned program and a recent PE deal the office closed.

Experience. Applied in early June; within four days, a 20-minute Zoom screener with an M&A partner and a litigation counsel. They skipped the resume walkthrough and went straight to why Latham over white-shoe NY firms.

Outcome. Callback invitation by email less than 48 hours later.

Non-target OCI pivot, Chicago office (Top 50)

Prep. Drilled STAR answers and prepared a question about Latham's decentralized, collaborative culture.

Experience. Formal OCI slot with two Chicago associates; warm but competency-focused, with behavioral questions on conflict and workflow. The closing culture question drew a ten-minute discussion.

Outcome. Invited to the Chicago superday by the end of the week.

What gets you through

Five moves that decide the HireVue

  1. 01STAR every behavioural. Situation in one sentence, task in one, action in three, result with a number. The structure is the score.
  2. 02Cut filler words ruthlessly. Three filler words ("um", "you know", "sort of") drops your confidence score by ~6 points. Record yourself, count them, stop them.
  3. 03Use specific numbers. "Led a team" is filler. "Led a 6-person team that delivered £400k of revenue" is signal. Every behavioural needs at least one quantified outcome.
  4. 04Reference Latham & Watkins concretely. For motivation questions, name a specific deal, a person you spoke to, a division you researched. Generic "I admire the brand" answers are the modal failure mode.
  5. 05Practise on camera, not in your head. Reading answers to yourself is not the same as recording them. Filler words, eye-line, pacing: all only show up when the camera is on.

FAQ

Latham & Watkins HireVue questions, answered

No. For US summer associate positions, the first evaluation is 100% live: you interact with real attorneys over FloRecruit or Zoom, in person at OCI, or rarely by phone. There is no recorded one-way HireVue, no AI scoring and no retakes. Prepare for a real-time, conversational 20-minute interview rather than a recorded format.
