The format

What Evercore's online assessment actually looks like

Immediately after resume submission and before the live rounds; for some pipelines it precedes the HireVue.

Timed sections

Most online assessments split into 3-5 sections, each with its own clock. Speed and accuracy both count.

Adaptive difficulty

Modern formats get harder if you answer correctly, easier if you struggle. Your final score reflects what you can actually do under time pressure.

Pass mark

Evercore sets a pass mark per test type. Below it, you don't progress regardless of how strong the rest of your application is.

Completion window. 48-72 hours to complete once the invitation lands (deadline pegged to Eastern Time).

By division. The same provider is used across M&A, Restructuring and Capital Markets; benchmark profiles are tuned for frontline advisory.

Recent changes. A stable SHL relationship over the last 2-3 cycles; Evercore opted out of gamified Pymetrics and custom simulations in favor of SHL's psychometric validation.

The provider

What Evercore actually buys

Evercore configures its own selection of SHL Verify G+ (Interleaved) plus SHL Situational Judgment Test modules. Below: the exact products in the suite, why they were chosen, and what the provider's reputation is across the candidate pool.

Modules in the suite

  • Numerical reasoning (data tables, charts, graphs)
  • Verbal reasoning (True / False / Cannot Say)
  • Logical / inductive / deductive reasoning (matrices, sequences)
  • Situational Judgment Test (workplace scenarios)

History at Evercore. The frontline screen of the US funnel, filtering for quantitative precision and resilience before any human review.

Candidate reputation. Seen as a rigorous, purely academic hurdle that tests raw processing speed and accuracy under time pressure rather than hiding behind games.

Section breakdown

What each part of the Evercore assessment tests

Each section has its own format, timer and trap pattern. Worked examples below show exactly what you will see and where candidates drop points.

Numerical reasoning

What it tests. Data interpretation, mental arithmetic, percentage changes, compound growth and currency conversions.

Common traps. The "red herring" data trap: prompts contain far more data than needed.

How to handle it. Read the question stem before the data, extract only the variables required, and use a physical calculator.

Verbal reasoning

What it tests. Critical evaluation and distinguishing explicit fact from implied assumption.

Common traps. Extrapolating real-world knowledge instead of relying on the text.

How to handle it. Treat the text as the only truth; if it cannot be explicitly proven, the answer is Cannot Say.

Logical / abstract reasoning

What it tests. Abstract reasoning, non-verbal pattern recognition and fluid intelligence.

Common traps. Fixating on the whole pattern at once and getting overwhelmed.

How to handle it. Isolate and track one element at a time, establish its rule, then eliminate options.

Situational Judgment Test

What it tests. Professionalism, prioritization, integrity, commercial awareness and collaboration.

Common traps. The passive/escalation trap: instantly escalating a minor issue or hiding a mistake.

How to handle it. Align with Evercore's ethos: verify the error, draft a solution, and notify your associate, never hide it.

Pass mark

How Evercore scores the assessment

SHL does not use a flat percentage. Scores are a normative percentile ranking against a global pool of high-performing finance applicants.

Competitive percentile thresholds

  • Elite target (85th percentile +). Automated progression to human/resume review
  • Competitive baseline (70th-84th). Marginally safe; depends on resume and networking
  • High risk (below 70th). High probability of automated rejection regardless of school

Methodology. A composite of correct answers, the speed-accuracy trade-off and response times. The "one weak section" rule: a disastrous score in any single section sinks the application.

Response time. 48 hours to two weeks to a first-round invite.

Score visibility. Candidates never see their scores or percentiles.

How to practise

Drill Evercore's exact format

Same provider, same section structure, same time pressure. With a scored report after every test so you can fix the weakest section before the real one.

  • SHL Verify G+ (Interleaved) plus SHL Situational Judgment Test-calibrated practice. Not a generic stand-in. The exact provider and section structure Evercore uses on the day.
  • Adaptive question difficulty. Questions get harder when you nail them, easier when you struggle. Walk away knowing where you actually stand.
  • Coaching, not just a score. "You are spending too long on table-data questions" beats "you scored 68%". Specific advice per weak section.
  • Percentile benchmarking. Your score compared to the US candidate pool, so you know if 70% is excellent or worrying for that test.

Why candidates fail

How candidates lose Evercore's assessment

Specific failure patterns documented across past applicants. Most are avoidable with structured preparation.

  1. 1

    Perfectionism that burns the clock

Solving every numerical item to the decimal instead of approximating and moving on; the test is built to create time pressure.

  2. 2

Treating the SJT as an ethics test

It is a prioritization test of how you navigate an investment bank's internal hierarchy, not just good vs bad behavior.

  3. 3

    Importing outside knowledge in verbal

Letting coursework validate a statement the passage does not explicitly support.

  4. 4

    Misreading adaptive scaling

Getting rattled as questions get harder and losing momentum, when the algorithm is simply testing your ceiling.

What works

What separates the candidates who pass

Concrete habits drilled by candidates who clear the cut-off, drawn from applicant accounts and practice patterns.

  • Ruthless time allocation

Hard-cap each question; if a puzzle is not solved within ~45 seconds, guess strategically and move on.

  • Master approximation

Round multi-digit financial figures to match the closest option and skip the final manual step.

  • Inhabit the analyst persona on the SJT

Pick options reflecting team execution, absolute accountability for errors and proactive communication of bottlenecks.

  • Flawless physical setup

Desktop monitor, fast mouse, a trusted financial calculator (TI BA II Plus or HP 12C) and systematic scratch paper.

From past applicants

How recent Evercore candidates approached the assessment

Anonymised candidate accounts of how recent applicants approached the Evercore assessment. Each covers the prep, the experience, and the outcome.

Target-school pivot, Advisory Analyst (New York)

Prep. Prepped heavily for technicals but was not ready for the interleaved time pressure; the SHL link arrived ~24 hours after applying.

Experience. A chart question, then a verbal True/False passage, then an abstract matrix in quick succession. Focused on accuracy over speed, locking rock-solid answers and skipping two complex pattern puzzles at the end.

Outcome. Received a first-round invite four days later.

Top business undergrad, the SJT trap

Prep. A 3.9 GPA and confidence on the math side, but skipped SJT practice assuming it was common sense.

Experience. The scenarios were highly IB-specific (an Associate task contradicting a VP's earlier instruction). Chose options that read as "efficient" but came off as dismissive of the chain of command.

Outcome. Automated rejection a week later despite strong quantitative scores; practice the workplace psychology too.

Practice strategy

Where to drill the Evercore format

Preparation must replicate the exact mixed, adaptive SHL G+ interface rather than generic untimed math.

  • Official SHL practice plus SHL-specific packs

Exhaust SHL's official practice for the true interface, then use SHL Verify G+ (interleaved) packs from JobTestPrep, AssessmentDay or ForgePrep.

  • Phased build: concept, speed, full sims

Phase 1 untimed concept mastery (~5h), Phase 2 strict section speed drills (~7h), Phase 3 four to five full-length interleaved simulations (~8h) at your real test time of day.

  • Intervyo timed aptitude practice

Numerical, verbal and abstract sets under realistic time pressure with a per-section debrief, so you can see which type is dragging your pace.

Time investment. Around 15-20 hours over two to three weeks is typical for strong scorers.

Time management

Five moves that protect your score

  1. 01Set your own clock per question. Divide section time by question count. Move on when you hit your per-question budget, even if you are mid-thought.
  2. 02Read the question before the chart. Half the work in numerical is finding the right number in a table. Knowing what you are looking for cuts the time in half.
  3. 03Use "Cannot Say" generously. Verbal reasoning rewards strict reading. If the passage does not say it, the answer is "Cannot Say", not your own inference.
  4. 04Skip the impossible ones. Most tests do not penalise wrong answers more than skips. If you cannot see it in 20 seconds, flag and move on.
  5. 05Practise the exact format, not a generic stand-in. SHL Verify G+ (Interleaved) plus SHL Situational Judgment Test has its own rhythm, and a generic reasoning test is not the same. Intervyo's simulation is calibrated to this format, so you rehearse the real thing under real timing rather than a generic aptitude set.

FAQ

Evercore Online Assessment questions, answered

SHL is Evercore's primary US provider, specifically the SHL Verify G+ interleaved assessment, which mixes numerical, verbal and logical reasoning throughout rather than in isolated blocks, usually paired with an SHL Situational Judgment Test. Evercore has kept this stable for 2-3 cycles, opting out of gamified or custom simulations. You get 48-72 hours to complete it once invited, with the deadline typically pegged to Eastern Time.
